June 2025 Newsletter
In Our Store
What an interesting start to the summer. Most people in our area were fortunate to get some beneficial rains over the last few weeks. This gives us the optimism to continue forward into the hot summer months. We have some good deals listed in the newsletter. Make sure to check them out!
- Last month I mentioned a CEU opportunity provided by the DeWitt County Crops Tour Committee. I made a mistake with the information. The location is not in Gruenau Hall this year. The location has changed to the Nordheim Shooting Club in Nordheim TX. Please make sure that you note this change if you plan to attend. All the remaining information is correct for the event.
- It is the time of year when many people start to consider acquiring a Private Applicators License. If you have an interest in getting a license, our local Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Office provides an introductory class to help you down that path. Please contact our DeWitt County Agrilife Extension Office at 361-275-0816.
- The recent rain is sure to get the Mud Daubers excited to make their nest. Many have tried the Rescue Wasp Trap sticks $9.15/Each. Make sure to stock up on this useful and effective tool for your shop and storage areas.
- We have added a new 4 Way Shelving Display in the store as you enter from the warehouse. This new addition will showcase sale items for the month, clearance items for the store, and visible feed samples to allow you to see what the feeds we make and sell look like.
- I mentioned last month we would close the feed mill for production. Progress is moving along, but we expect that timeframe to still be another 4-6 weeks.
- When we reopen our feed mill, we plan to make some changes to our bulk feed delivery prices. To be competitive we will have a flat price for delivery along with a price per ton. We will make it cheaper for you to get bulk feed from our store.
- We have been informed by the City of Cuero that they will limit access to Frederick Williams St. starting in the month of June. This is the road that runs parallel to our warehouse loading dock. Please expect some changes to the way we load you when this happens. As in many things in life, it will not last forever and will return to normal.
- There is a lot of hype and concern about the New World Screwworms in Livestock. The Texas Animal Health Commission has shared some things to look for and best practices.
- Identify wounds on your cattle and determine if they have a mucous coming from them.
- If they have mucous coming out check if they are infested with larvae, flies, or maggots. They will have a tapered body along with protruding spines giving a screw-like appearance.
- If you feel like your animal is infested, please contact our local Texas Animal Health Commission at 979-212-5440 (Giddings Region) between 8:00 AM-5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
- The eggs and larvae must be removed from inside and around the wound and treated with a pesticide such as permethrin.
In the Yard
- If you made an early application of yard fertilizer, consider a second application to keep your yard looking green and pretty. Here is a list again of what you can use.
- 28-0-4 Yard Fertilizer = $27.40/42LB Bag
- 25-0-4 Weed & Feed Yard Fertilizer = $37.30/39LB Bag
- 21-7-14 American Plant Food Yard Fertilizer = $24.10/40LB Bag
- If you do not like snakes, get you some Snake-A-Way $16.20/Bag or Bonide Snake Stopper $16.50/Jug. These products are good to apply around the perimeter of your yard or popular family gathering areas. Please remember that their effectiveness will diminish over time and as it gets rained upon.
- This is a suitable time to make another application of a pre-emergent herbicide on our yards. This will help with the late flush of flowers, dove weeds, and grass burrs that typically appear. The products we have are: Barricade ($29.60/50LB Bag) use 3#/1000 SQ FT, Dimension ($35.20/35LB Bag) use 3.5#/1000 SQ FT to combat broadleaf and grassy weeds, and Balan ($44.00/40LB Bag) use 1.5#/ 1000 SQ FT to combat grassy weeds.
In the Pasture
- The recent rain has continued to push weeds out of the ground. I mentioned last month that we need to look at higher rates of chemicals to make sure we give them the punch. If you have questions about what to use or the rates, please give us a call.
- If you made the early season application of Rezilon for grass burr control, now is the time to make that second application. The best situation is after a hay cutting or when the grass is grazed short. The rate of application again is (3oz/Acre) $45.86/Acre including application.
- Now is a good time to get a plan together to spray Mesquite Plants. Please make sure that the plants have no new growth, a dark green color, and with an elongated bean of 7”-10”. If you need help determining if you are in the right window to spray, please give us a call. If you would also like us to make the application for you, please give us a call and get on our list. There are a few options available to get these stubborn plants.
- Diesel and Remedy (Basal Treatment) = 4 OZ of Remedy, 124 OZ Diesel (Make sure to spray all the way around the base and up 6”-12” from the ground)
- Sendero and Remedy (Foliar Spray) = 28 OZ of Sendero, 8 OZ Remedy + 1 Quart Surfactant (Make sure to spray the entire plants leaves and make sure they are wet prior to runoff)
- Invora (Foliar Spray) = 36 OZ of Invora + 1 Quart Surfactant (Make sure to spray the entire plants leaves and make sure they are wet prior to runoff)
